Thekkady or Periyar, considered a heaven for natural spices such as black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and clove, is the location of the Periyar National Park, which is an important tourist attraction in the Kerala state of India. The Reserve covers hills and verdant forests extending over an area of 777 sq kms. The Wild Life Sanctuary was declared a Tiger Reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaiperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park.The forests of Periyar can be divided into four categories - The open grassland, deciduous forest, semi-evergreen forest and tropical evergreen forest. The varied habitat in the sanctuary supports a number of species of terrestrial, aquatic and arboreal animals. The greatest attraction of Periyar are the herd of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake.
